Getting Ready for Carnevale in Venice
Published on Thursday, January 10, 2013 by

That time of year is fast approaching…a spectacular time to visit the magical city of Venice…Carnevale. Short of Rio and New Orleans, there is no place more famous for its opulent pre-Lent celebrations. The Venetian events are getting off to a slightly earlier start this year since Ash Wednesday falls a bit early, on February 13.

Venice’s official program of Carnevale events runs from January 26 to February 12. Some of the highlights include a silent, candlelight boat parade on the canals, a walking theater show called “Secrets in Venice” and numerous music performances.

Yet the ultimate Venetian Carnevale experience is to attend an opulent masked ball. The once-in-a-lifetime experience doesn’t come cheap with tickets starting at several hundred euros (plus the cost of renting a costume) but these balls are truly over the top with live performances, Venetian cuisine, decor that takes you back centuries. Il Ballo del Doge is one of Venice’s best Carnevale balls.
