salamiA long-standing ban on the import of salami into the United States will be lifted on May 28, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.  Previously the American Federal Drug Administration prohibited the import of cured pork products. The move will open up a huge market for Italian salami manufacturers.

The Italian farmers’ organization Coldiretti estimates that the lifting of the ban could mean an additional 250 million euros in new exports to the U.S.

Plus there’s the issue of Americans now being able to enjoy the real deal on American shores.  “Until now Americans have been forced to buy low-quality imitations of Italian cured meats,” said a representative for Coldiretti.
