When the Gelato World Cup comes to Rimini from January 19 to 21, 2020, gelato chefs

from around the world will face off to see who can whip up the best desserts. France and Italy, which have both won previous competitions at different times but have never competed against each other, are considered the two frontrunners and have assembled their teams for the event.

Italy’s team includes executive chef Marco Martinelli, gelato chef Eugenio Morrone, pastry chef and chocolatier Massimo Carnio and ice sculptor Ciro Chiummo. They will prepare under the tutelage of world champion gelato chef Beppo Tonon.

The Gelato World Cup aims to promote gelato chefs to the public to earn them renown. It has taken place eight times since 2003. Ten other countries besides France and Italy will compete in 2020: Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, Singapore and Spain.

Each country’s team will have a captain, executive chef, gelato chef, pastry chef and ice sculptor. Over the three-day event, they will have to create eight dessert dishes, including gelato or sorbet, gelato cake, ice sculptures, and gelato snacks. The final event is the Grand Buffet, at which teams will display their creations and receive marks from 24 judges.
